Professor Russell Davies

Honorary Distinguished Professor, School of Mathematics, Cardiff University

Honorary Professor, Department of Mathematics, Aberystwyth University

Specialist Subjects: Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, Numerical Analysis, Inverse Problems

Russell DaviesProfessor Russell Davies BSc, MSc, DPhil, FLSW, was educated at the Universities of London, Cambridge and Oxford. Prior to taking up an appointment at The University College of Wales Aberystwyth, he held the Atlas Research Fellowship in Mathematics at Pembroke College Oxford. With Marcel Crochet and Ken Walters he co-authored the first research monograph on the numerical simulation of non-Newtonian flow, and subsequently worked on several industrial problems in lubrication, materials characterization, and food processing, which attracted significant research funding. He was awarded the British Society Annual Award in 2005 for his fundamental work on inverse problems in linear viscoelasticity, and was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2011. He is a former President of SIAM UK and Ireland, and has served on the board of the Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences. He is also a former member of the Scientific Committee of the Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics, and has held frequent visiting research fellowships at the Australian National University and CSIRO Canberra.

He retired in 2014 having been Head of Mathematics at both Aberystwyth and Cardiff Universities, and now holds honorary appointments at both institutions. He continues to publish on inverse problems in linear viscoelasticity and superposition rheometry.
