The INNFM Annual Conference 2013

It was on a cold snowy day in March 2013 that delegates met at the Royal Society International Centre at Chicheley Hall in Buckinghamshire for a meeting on ‘Advances in Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics’. There were twenty nine speakers from twelve different countries and lecture topics covered both experimental and theoretical work as well as a number of application areas. Two sessions of the meeting were devoted to a mini-symposium on ‘Theoretical Rheology’ in honour of Russell Davies.
A poster session was well supported and included a prize sponsored by TA Instruments for the best poster. A panel chaired by Gerry Fuller carried out the judging duties and the prize was awarded to Claire McIlroy, a postgraduate student from
A part of the meeting was given over to British Society of Rheology business, including the award to Tim Phillips of the 2012 Annual Award of the BSR. Tim’s Annual Award Lecture followed together with the Presidential Address by retiring president, Bill Frith. The session finished with the Annual General Meeting of the Society.
At the Monday dinner, Tim Phillips, a long standing colleague of Russell Davies’ gave an amusing critique of Russell’s management skills, and at Tuesday dinner we listened to Jeffery Giacomin who entertained us with a miscellany of pictures and comments giving a snapshot of his view of the world around him. As President of the Society of Rheology, at the end of his talk, Jeff surprised everybody, not least Gareth McKinley, by announcing that Gareth was to be awarded the Bingham Medal.

The meeting included a well supported accompanying persons programme. Fifteen partners of delegates enjoyed the excellent facilities at Chicheley Hall as well as a full day visit to Woburn Abbey.
