The Lake Vyrnwy Meeting 2017
The Institute returned to the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel for its 2017 spring rheology meeting. Eminent rheologists from all over the world gathered in this majestic location for some excellent rheology.
Each session of the conference had a different focus, and on the first afternoon a session was dedicated to the work of David Binding, on the occasion of his retirement from Aberystwyth University. The session was a mixture of personal anecdotes and serious rheology, much of it inspired by Dave's work on contraction flows.
Tuesday morning's conference sessions started with a chirp which turned into an OWCh, courtesy of Gareth McKinley. Sessions followed on Rheometry, Computational Rheology and Applied Rheology, giving an indication of the breadth, as well as depth, of the meeting. Helen Wilson finished the scientific presentations with an explanation of what is difficult in understanding "Walking on Custard"; this, her presidential address, preceded the BSR AGM, at which Tim Phillips took over as BSR president.
The post-banquet speech was a Giacomin affair, with a light roasting of several of those present. Jeff looked back to Ruthin, and forward to Herstmonceux castle in 2019, with an inferred but unspoken warning to be extremely careful what you say within his hearing over the next two years.
Wednesday started with a session on biofluids, covering an eclectic mixture of chewing, diabetes and swimming E-coli. In total, there were 55 delegates and 30 talks at the meeting. Karl and the group from Swansea are to be congratulated on organising an excellent meeting.
In addition to the main programme of lectures, there was a poster session. The award for the best poster was presented by Peter Hodder of TA Instruments to Fruzina Lamer of Swansea University.
